Riyaaz – October 2021

Riyaaz

October  : 2021

The Riyazees continued with the picture book project they had embarked on last month. As some had anticipated—and also the ones who did not see it coming—difficulties galore awaited them as they carried their respective works forward. Challenges in the form of medium selection, technique, verbal-visual chasm, and so on, were the constants. But, what is a creative process without hurdles and heartbreaks? As much as the joy of creation and expression, art is also a register of pain, a crafty reconciliation with one’s lacks and quirks. An artist’s journey is fuelled as much by the setbacks they have overcome as it depends on their inherent talent.

Through elaborate discussions with the faculty, the students tried, and re-tried, to get their visual interpretations to complement the verbal matter at hand. On the artwork side, they had additional help as Mr. Atanu Roy, one of the founding members of Riyaaz, ran several pocketed sessions and demonstrated the aspects students sought his help with. For those raring for some basic training on perspective, Mr. Jai Kothari’s presence helped them wrap their heads around the treatment of spaces and structures. Overall, the October sessions were a lesson in what lies on an artist’s path and how relentless labour is the sole anchor of the ship they intend to sail.
